It turns out this offseason’s quarterback carousel still has one more seat to fill. A week after getting his eligibility back at the NCAA level, Brendan Sorsby has reportedly decided to enter the supplemental draft instead. As one of the more talented quarterbacks at the collegiate level, some feel a team may spend as high as a Day 2 pick on Sorsby. But the sense from teams around the NFL doesn’t seem to corroborate that.
“Nothing has changed in terms of his on-field evaluation — Sorsby is the most talented quarterback prospect to enter the supplemental draft in over 30 years,” draft expert Dane Brugler said via Bruce Feldman in an article posted Tuesday for The Athletic. “But obviously, his off-field situation is very serious and complicates his NFL projection. After talking with teams, best guess is a team uses a Day 3 pick on Sorsby.”
With Sorsby, the talent is apparent. He’s got the size for the position, able to absorb hits in the pocket while having the speed to be something of a dual-threat player as well. His arm strength is impressive, and Sorsby didn’t throw many interceptions in college. His footwork and accuracy need improvement, but there are many reasons he was originally one of the top quarterbacks in the 2027 class.
This could be tantalizing for a team unhappy with its quarterback room as training camp approaches. But the supplemental draft isn’t as easy as just getting a steal months after the actual NFL Draft. Whichever pick a team uses on Brendan Sorsby will be lost in the 2027 draft.
There’s a long way to go, but the 2027 draft class appears loaded at quarterback. Teams with multiple first-round picks, or teams that are more likely to pick early next year, might not want to sacrifice that capital. There is talent with Sorsby, and certainly some teams would see him as a strong addition to the roster. But the strength in next year’s class, plus Sorsby’s off-field issues, may drive the price down.
The Steelers have never selected a player in the supplemental draft. It doesn’t feel like they’ll break that precedent this year. The Steelers already have two quarterbacks unlikely to play in Will Howard and Drew Allar. Adding a third in Sorsby only makes things more complicated. And Pittsburgh may not want to deal with the issues that helped end Sorsby’s collegiate career.
Brendan Sorsby’s situation will be interesting to watch over the next couple of weeks. Although the Steelers might not be in the mix, it should have ramifications for the 2027 quarterback class. But Brugler doesn’t expect too high a price for Sorsby.
