The Liverpool transfer news about Darwin Nunez has gained buzz. In a surprise move, the Uruguayan forward is considering a return to Anfield.

Darwin Nunez set for ‘homecoming’?

Nunez is perhaps not too impressed with his stint at Al-Hilal. This is why 26-year-old is reconsidering his options. As reported by Mirror, the former Liverpool forward is considering a comeback to Anfield. Nunez joined Al-Hilal in 2025. He was acquired by the Saudi club from the Reds for an amount of €53 million, as reported by Sky Sports. He previously played for Liverpool from 2022 to 2025.

Nunez’s stats for the 2025-26 season, as per FOTMOB:

Competitions Matches Goals Assists

Saudi Pro League 16 6 4

AFC Champions League 6 3 1

Darwin Nunez’s contribution to Liverpool and Al-Hilal

Nunez entered the Saudi Pro League with high hopes. However, things didn’t go exactly as per plans. Moreover, he sustained a knee injury in September 2025 that kept him out for a while last year. Despite that, Nunez performed well on an individual basis for the Saudi club at the Saudi Pro League. Additionally, he scored three crucial goals for the club at the AFC Champions League.

Meanwhile, Liverpool suffered a rough ride last season. The Reds finished fifth overall in the 2025-26 Premier League. This was just a year after the Reds won the League title for the 2024-25 season. Liverpool also faced early exits in the FA Cup and the EFL Cup as well. Consequently, Arne Slot was replaced by Andoni Iraola for the upcoming season.

Interestingly, Nunez played a crucial role in Liverpool’s title victory at the 2024-25 Premier League. He was also a part of the team that won the 2023-24 EFL Cup, and finished runners-up in the 2024-25 edition. If he returns to Anfield, the team will get a major boost in the attacking lineup.

Future Gameplan for Darwin Nunez

Darwin Nunez is currently participating at the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026. Despite having not played a single international game since 2025, team manager Marcelo Bielsa decided to include him in the final squad announced by the end of May.

Nunez will aim to bring back the Uruguay team to winning ways. The team hasn’t won a major title in world **football**since 2011. They had last won the Copa America title in the 2011 edition. Interestingly, Uruguay won the inaugural edition of the FIFA World Cup held in 1930. However, since the 1950 edition, La Celeste haven’t even reached the final. Their last great performance came in the 2010 edition, when they entered the semifinals. Uruguay last entered the quarterfinals of the World Cup in the 2018 edition. They were subsequently eliminated in the group stage of the 2022 edition.

As such, it won’t be an easy task for Nunez if he aims for the ultimate glory. However, the forward is optimistic about the team’s chances. He was a part of the team that clinched the bronze medal at the 2024 Copa America edition. He is hopeful of a significant turnaround this time.

Meanwhile, Liverpool is undergoing a serious transformation. Andoni Iraola knows that he cannot afford to repeat the same mistakes as his predecessor. He is working on a tactical evolution of the Reds. This is why multiple players have been sought, including Nunez. It won’t be an easy deal for sure. However, if he agrees to rejoin Anfield, he can bring the club back to winning ways.
