Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad decision has once again sparked debate among supporters.
Following the injury suffered by Tino Livramento, many expected former Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold to receive a recall to the Three Lions squad.
Instead, Tuchel opted to call up Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah.
It is another decision that leaves many England supporters wondering exactly where Trent stands in the national team picture.
A Unique Footballer
The debate surrounding Alexander-Arnold has followed him throughout his career.
There has never been much disagreement about his talent.
The question has always been whether his strengths outweigh his weaknesses.
Defensively, there have been moments where he has been exposed.
That is undeniable.
However, what is equally undeniable is that he offers qualities very few players in world football possess.
His passing range.
His vision.
His creativity.
His ability to change games with a single ball.
There simply are not many full-backs capable of doing what Trent does.
England’s Different Options
Tuchel clearly appears to favour a more traditional profile in the position.
Players such as Livramento, Reece James and Kyle Walker are often selected because of their athleticism and defensive reliability.
Chalobah’s inclusion follows a similar theme.
England have no shortage of solid defenders.
What they do lack is a player capable of unlocking a defence from deep with the consistency Alexander-Arnold can provide.
Why the Snub Feels Harsh
For many supporters, this latest omission feels particularly surprising because England were not replacing a midfielder or a winger.
They were replacing a right-back.
And few players have achieved more in that position over the past decade than Alexander-Arnold.
Whether operating as a full-back, wing-back or hybrid midfielder, he remains one of the most influential creators English football has produced.
That is why some supporters struggle to understand why he continues to be overlooked.
My View: He Offers Something Nobody Else Does
Personally, I still believe Alexander-Arnold should be part of England’s squad.
Not because he is perfect.
Far from it.
Every player has weaknesses.
But because he brings something completely different.
England already have defensive-minded options.
They already have athletes.
They already have players who can do the basics well.
What they do not have is another full-back capable of creating chances the way Trent can.
When games become tight and opponents sit deep, those qualities become invaluable.
A Weapon England Should Use
International football is often decided by moments.
One pass.
One cross.
One piece of inspiration.
Alexander-Arnold has built his entire career on producing exactly those moments.
There will always be debate about his best position.
There will always be questions about his defensive game.
But leaving a player with that level of creativity completely out of the squad feels difficult to justify.
The Debate Will Continue
Ultimately, Tuchel is the man tasked with making the decisions.
He clearly has a vision for how he wants England to play.
However, every time Alexander-Arnold is overlooked, the debate grows louder.
Because while England have plenty of good right-backs, they only have one Trent Alexander-Arnold.
And for me, that uniqueness alone makes him worth including.
