News emerges that Axel Disasi is expected to leave Chelsea this summer. The French centre back has faced difficulties to get regular game time at the Stamford Bridge. Both parties have talked in the recent times and decided to part ways.

Chelsea and Disasi reach agreement on summer exit

According to BBC, Chelsea and Axel Disasi have mutually agreed that a permanent transfer for him will be the best outcome for both parties. The 28-year-old French defender joined Chelsea from Monaco in 2023 for a transfer fee of £38.5 million. Since then, he spent a lot of time on loan in the last two seasons. Despite his loan spells at Aston Villa and West Ham, he failed to make a name for himself and secure a long-term future at the club.

Now it feels that Disasi will want a fresh chapter in his career. As reported by BBC, talks between Chelsea and Disasi have been positive and both sides understand the current situation. A fresh start at some other club will be good for Disasi as he wants regular game time. It will also help Chelsea to get funds and create space in the squad for new signings.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso does not see Disasi fitting in his system. As per the BBC report mentioned earlier, Axel Disasi still has 3 years left on his contract. Chelsea will now listen to offers and then make a decision.

Disasi’s career timeline since joining Chelsea as reported by FotMob:

Club Duration

Chelsea Aug 2023 to Feb 2025 and July 2025 to Feb 2026

Aston Villa Feb 2025 to June 2025

West Ham Feb 2026 to June 2026

Why did Axel Disasi struggle at Chelsea?

As reported by the official Premier League website, Disasi joined Chelsea from Monaco in 2023 with high expectations. The club paid a fee of £38.5 million for him. He started the games for the Blues and was becoming an important player for the team. Then competition for the starting 11 increased and his opportunities decreased. His injury issues also side-lined him from playing football.

As reported by The Daily Mail, he joined Aston Villa on a half season loan in February 2025. He got some game time there but he returned to Chelsea after his loan ended and Aston Villa did not sign him again. In the first half of 2025/26 Premier League season he did not get minutes under then-manager Enzo Maresca so he was loaned to West Ham.

Disasi’s failure is mainly because of instability in the squad management and his injury issues. Managers kept changing at Chelsea. As a result, he was unable to show his consistency and progress while adapting to the changing tactics.

What’s in the future for Disasi and Chelsea?

The next few weeks will be very important for Disasi’s future. There is interest from some clubs of England and Italy namely Newcastle United and, thus he will have options to look at for the next chapter in his career. Clubs who want an experienced centre back may seem him as a valuable signing. At 28 years old, he still has a lot to give on the football pitch. He has experience of playing in the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and National team with France. He will now search for a club that will give him regular game time.

Chelsea will look to start fresh under Xabi Alonso. By selling Disasi they will be able to create space in their squad and earn some money that can be partially used to fund new signings. Also, this will free up his wages and can ease the load from their financial books.
