Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation heading into the 2026/27 season is far from straightforward.

Alisson Becker remains at Anfield for one more campaign, but the Brazilian’s injury record over recent seasons has raised legitimate questions about reliability — and his contract situation means this will be his final year at the club.

His deputy, Giorgi Mamardashvili, was brought in with considerable fanfare but failed to fully convince during the spells he deputised for Alisson in 2025/26, with the Georgian shot-stopper’s struggles at least partially attributed to a Liverpool side that was far from its best in front of him.

With the long-term picture still hazy, Liverpool will have been hoping that the depth of their goalkeeper pool provided some comfort. That hope has taken another hit.

According to The Athletic, Vitezslav Jaros, a player Liverpool hold in high regard, will be sidelined for most of 2026 after suffering a serious knee injury.

The 24-year-old, who turns 25 next month, had been enjoying a productive loan spell at Ajax in the Eredivisie when disaster struck in February.

The nature of the injury required surgery, and the Czech stopper was forced to cut short his time in Amsterdam and return to Merseyside to begin his rehabilitation under the club’s medical team.

The timing could hardly have been worse for Jaros on a personal level. The World Cup, a tournament he had genuine hopes of featuring in for the Czech Republic, came without a call-cup, a painful blow for a goalkeeper who has been quietly building his reputation as a capable top-level option.

His road back to full fitness is expected to be a long one. Jaros will not realistically have a chance to reassess his future until the 2027 winter transfer window at the earliest, with that timeline contingent on his rehab progressing without any further setbacks.

Armin Pesci and Freddie Woodman will be able to shore up the squad, although Pesci is attracting loan interest after making his senior Hungary debut earlier this month.
