Manchester City star unlikely to play World Cup opener – Risk of relapse behind decision

Portugal are due to begin their World Cup campaign against DR Congo in just a few hours. However, Manchester City defender Ruben Dias now appears increasingly unlikely to start the match.

The centre-back has been one of the main fitness concerns in Roberto Martinez’s squad since Portugal arrived in the United States.

Earlier reports suggested Dias was simply being managed after a long season. However, Wednesday’s Portuguese newspapers indicate there is growing caution around his involvement.

According to A Bola, Dias returned to the pitch and worked with a ball during Portugal’s final session before travelling to Houston. However, he once again trained away from the main group.

The newspaper explains that the Manchester City defender continues to recover from an ankle injury suffered in April.

While his condition is progressing positively, the proximity of Portugal’s opening match and the possibility of a relapse are encouraging a particularly cautious approach.

Portugal looking beyond the opening match

The situation appears linked to Portugal’s wider tournament planning.

Martinez recently spoke about effectively preparing for “two World Cups” – one being the group stage and the other the knockout rounds – and the coaching staff are said to be managing workloads with that longer-term view in mind.

That approach has become even more important given the demanding weather conditions Portugal have encountered in the United States.

Jornal de Notícias also report that Dias remains under restrictions and describe his chances of facing DR Congo as uncertain at best.

The newspaper suggests it could even be counterproductive to use him against opposition expected to bring a highly physical approach.

Potential replacement emerges

Should Dias be left out, Renato Veiga is emerging as the most likely replacement.

The Chelsea defender’s athletic profile is viewed as a good fit for the challenge posed by DR Congo. He could potentially play alongside Gonçalo Inácio in the centre of defence.

For Manchester City, the latest reports point towards precaution rather than a setback. However, with kick-off approaching, Portugal increasingly appear willing to begin their World Cup without one of their most important players. They seem ready to do this if it means protecting him for the rest of the tournament.
