Jurgen Klopp has been making plenty of noise at the 2026 FIFA World Cup – and not all of it has been planned.

The former Liverpool boss is in the United States working as a pundit for German broadcaster Magenta TV.

It has not been without its awkward moments, however.

During Germany’s Group E opener – a 7-1 demolition of Curacao – Klopp remarked live on air that “luckily, Julian Nagelsmann is still picking the team,” the word “still” landing like a grenade in German football circles, with many interpreting it as a veiled hint that Nagelsmann’s tenure could be short-lived.

Klopp made an on-camera apology to the Germany coach shortly after the final whistle, admitting he “could have punched himself in the face” for the slip.

Off the back of that drama, Klopp was also spotted sharing a selfie with Virgil van Dijk after the Netherlands’ draw with Japan.

Away from the cameras, though, Klopp has been quietly wielding influence in a rather different capacity. In his role as Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull, the 59-year-old has been involved in RB Salzburg’s new managerial appointment.

FC Red Bull Salzburg has officially confirmed the appointment of Danny Rohl as their new head coach, with the 37-year-old German signing a three-year contract running until summer 2029 .

According to reports from Salzburger Nachrichten, it was Klopp who personally identified Rohl as the standout candidate to take charge in Austria. The Liverpool legend’s endorsement put Rohl at the top of the list.

Salzburg then formally approached Rangers regarding a deal, with Röhl – who had been contracted at Ibrox until 2028 – ultimately making the move.

He previously served as an assistant under Ralph Hasenhüttl at RB Leipzig and Southampton, before going on to work under Hansi Flick at Bayern Munich, where he collected Champions League, Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup honours .

He was also part of Flick’s Germany national team setup before stepping into senior management roles at Sheffield Wednesday and then Rangers.
