Manchester United are entering another important stage of their squad rebuild as Michael Carrick continues shaping his team for the future.

The focus around Old Trafford remains on transfers and creating a squad capable of competing across multiple competitions.

While the men’s team prepares for a new chapter, former United players continue to make moves of their own across European football.

That has now included a familiar name from the women’s setup, with one ex-Red Devil securing a fresh opportunity in the Women’s Super League.

Kirsty Hanson officially joins Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed, via their website, the signing of Scotland international Kirsty Hanson from Aston Villa after an outstanding season.

The forward arrives in north London after scoring 12 goals in 22 league appearances last season, finishing third in the WSL Golden Boot race.

Her performances also earned major recognition at Villa, where she was named Player of the Season and won the club’s WSL Goal of the Season award.

The move sees Kirsty Hanson link up again with Martin Ho, who previously worked with her during his time as assistant coach at Manchester United Women.

Ho, who became Tottenham Women’s head coach last July, believes Hanson’s versatility will add another attacking option to his squad.

“Kirsty is a player with proven quality in the WSL and someone who has consistently shown she can affect games at this level.

“She brings pace, energy, directness and real threat in the final third, but also the work ethic and intensity we want in our attacking players.”

“She played a lot of her football last season as a centre forward, while also having the ability to play wide, and that versatility is really important for us in how we want to attack.”

Hanson was part of Manchester United Women’s journey from the early years, joining the newly formed side in July 2018.

During her time at the club, the Scottish forward made 90 appearances and scored 16 goals before leaving permanently in August 2023.

She initially moved to Villa on loan during the 2022/23 season before the switch became permanent, allowing her career to continue developing in the WSL.

The 28-year-old admitted she is excited about taking on a new challenge in north London.

“I’m absolutely delighted, it’s an exciting time to be a part of this Club.

“I’m ready for a new challenge, and I’m always wanting to be better every single day.”

“Martin (Ho), the Club, the staff, the players are at such an exciting point – and I want to be a part of that.”

Hanson’s rise since leaving Old Trafford highlights the continued impact of former United players, with another familiar face now looking to help Spurs push forward.

Ho also explained why Hanson’s ability to play across the frontline could be crucial for his plans.

“We want players in the front line who can rotate, threaten different spaces, press with intensity and give us different solutions during games.”

“Kirsty can stretch teams in behind, attack one vs. one, arrive in goal-scoring areas and also help connect the game when playing more centrally.

“That flexibility gives us more ways to hurt teams and allows us to be less predictable as an attacking team.”

Hanson’s move marks another chapter for a former United player who continues to make her mark in the WSL after leaving Old Trafford.
