Sam LaPorta “Trending in the Right Direction” After 2025 Injury

Tight end Sam LaPorta had his 2025 season cut short for the Detroit Lions, which was a significant reason for the team’s struggles. As one of the best players at the tight end position, he is a critical piece for the offense getting to the level where things are just clicking. Let’s take a closer look at where the star tight end is on his progression and what it means for the Lions heading into the 2026 season.

Dan Campbell provides update on Sam LaPorta ahead of training camp

Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta (87) makes a catch against Washington Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu (4) during the first half at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Md. on Sunday, November 9, 2025.

On Tuesday, via the transcript from the team, Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell provided a quick update on Sam LaPorta:

“We like where he is going, he is trending the right way.”

Sam LaPorta was limited to just nine games in the 2025 season due to a back injury, which landed him on injured reserve in mid-November. The 25-year-old tight end finished the season with 40 receptions on 49 targets for 489 yards (12.2 yards per catch) with three receiving touchdowns. He was able to be a limited participant during mandatory minicamp, but is not cleared to be a full participant at this point.

Sam LaPorta suffered a herniated disc that needed surgery, but entering a critical season for him, this is going to be an intriguing season for the former Pro Bowler. He is entering the final season of his rookie contract and does not have the fifth-year option available as he was selected in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The Lions are going to be looking a bit revamped on the offensive side of the ball after trading away David Montgomery, rookie wide receiver Kendrick Law suffering a torn ACL, and changes across the offensive line.

LaPorta has been a bit of a safety blanket for quarterback Jared Goff throughout his career. With a new offensive coordinator in Drew Petzing, this offense could look a bit different. Having experience with a legitimate top tight end in Trey McBride, do not be surprised if Sam LaPorta is going to be a focal point in the new-look Lions offense for the 2026 season.

With the ability to at least participate in walk-throughs, he has at least learned some of the offense while being sidelined. It will be intriguing to see how LaPorta is able to recover from a back injury that has the potential to hamper players for a long time.
