Reliable journalist has now made exciting claim about Liverpool's attacking business

**Liverpool are in need of attacking signings ahead of next season, and reliable journalist James Pearce has provided an encouraging new update.**

The Reds look light in the attacking third heading into the summer transfer window, following Mohamed Salah’s exit after nine incredible years at Anfield.

Hugo Ekitike is a long-term injury absentee after rupturing his Achilles against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, and there are doubts over the futures of Cody Gakpo and Federico Chiesa.

According to [_The Athletic_](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7361885/2026/06/16/transfer-dealsheet-man-utd-arsenal-liverpool/)‘s Pearce, Liverpool will target two attackers before next season gets underway, with Andoni Iraola clearly seeing the importance of additions there:

_“With Mohamed Salah having left, Federico Chiesa’s future uncertain and Hugo Ekitike recovering from a ruptured Achilles, Liverpool are expected to buy at least two attacking players. Reports in South America have suggested that striker Darwin Nunez could return to Anfield after a spell at Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal, but senior Liverpool sources insist that is not the case._

_“Centre midfield and right-back are also positions that need to be addressed. There’s an acceptance internally that, due to the World Cup and Andoni Iraola’s desire to assess the talent he’s inherited in the early stages of pre-season, business is more likely to happen later in the window this time around.”_

**At least 2 new attackers required for Liverpool this summer**

This should be music to the ears of Liverpool fans, who had to sit through their side toiling in attack for much of last season, with Salah a shadow of his former self and Gakpo way below his best.

In truth, a minimum of two attackers is essential for the Reds, with a winger on either flank most important, and ideally a centre forward as well.

Yan Diomande and Bradley Barcola, of RB Leipzig and PSG respectively, feel like leading options out wide, but they would admittedly cost a lot of money combined.

But then a striker to act as backup to Alexander Isak is arguably needed, too, given the length of Ekitike’s absence, especially if the Swede again struggles with fitness issues of his own in his second year at Liverpool.
