GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - The Green Bay Packers are pushing back against Wisconsin Congressman Scott Fitzgerald, who led a hearing about possible changes to the 1961 Sports Broadcasting Act.
The act allows the NFL and its teams to negotiate broadcasting rights collectively.
The Packers argue the current broadcast structure supports revenue sharing and helps stabilize all teams regardless of market size. They add any major changes could impact the future of the Packers in Green Bay.
Over the weekend on Upfront, Fitzgerald said the Packers are overreacting.
“That’s absolutely ridiculous and almost laughable, that is absolutely the Packers going for kind of hair on fire, oh my gosh, the world’s coming to an end if this would be tweaked,” Fitzgerald said.
The team responded to the interview saying in part, “What is laughable is that a congressman from Wisconsin is leading this charge. Why threaten the team his community overwhelmingly cherishes and its ability to compete on a level playing field?”
The Packers added, “It is careless and unwise to rearrange the bricks of a foundation which has stood strong for over half a century.”
Fitzgerald has said he doesn’t want to fully eliminate the Sports Broadcasting Act but is proposing potential changes down the road.
