Man United’s move for £50m-rated star could shatter transfer plans - opinion

Manchester United are interested in West Ham United winger Crysencio Summerville with the club looking to sign a left winger this summer.

United have made an enquiry about a potential deal and have been told the Dutch winger is available for £50 million.

Summerville impressed in a poor West Ham side last term, weighing in with seven goals and five assists across all competitions.

He is already starring for the Netherlands at the World Cup, scoring in their 2-2 draw with Japan on Sunday.

The 24-year-old is known for his dribbling, speed, drawing fouls and combining with teammates using short passes.

Summerville’s signing could affect United’s transfer plans

While Summerville could be a good addition, a move could alter United’s plan to sign a new left-back.

His potential arrival could force Patrick Dorgu to contend for a left-back spot rather than a place on the left wing.

Dorgu has struggled at full-back since joining United, but excelled as a forward last season — arguably more than Summerville.

The Danish youngster (while deployed as a winger) ranked in higher percentiles for assists, key passes, crosses completed and non-penalty goals than the West Ham forward.

However, Summerville ranked higher for dribbles completed, carries and non-penalty goal involvements.

Also, the Netherlands international has yet to perform consistently at the top level. All five of his league goals last season came after the turn of the year.

At the moment, United are better served prioritising a move for a left-back over signing Summerville.

Luke Shaw has been decent rather than outstanding in that role, making it important for United to sign someone to replace him.

Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall is United’s leading candidate for the left-back position. He could be available for £50 million.
