Why Harry Maguire isn't playing in the World Cup for England

Harry Maguire was a stalwart in the center of England's defense for a long time.

At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, though, Maguire isn't taking part for Thomas Tuchel's English squad.

It was at least a bit of a surprise at the time the squad was announced, but by now, it's just reality.

If England is to bring it home, it'll happen without Maguire.

Why isn't Harry Maguire at the World Cup for England?

Tuchel chose to go with younger options in the center of his defense than the 33-year old Maguire.

He dealt with injuries early in the season for Manchester United, but he got back to full fitness by the latter stage of the campaign.

Despite that, he didn't make the team.

Maguire played for England in both 2018 and 2022 at the World Cup, but not in 2026. He has 66 career caps for England.

Maguire took to social media to share a heartfelt message in which he expressed his disappointment soon after the squad was announced.

"I was confident I could of played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had," Maguire wrote on X. "I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision."

Maguire didn't keep it all doom and gloom. He added some heartfelt emotion in there, too.

"I’ve loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years," Maguire wrote.

The former England captain signed off his message with positivity (and an England flag emoji).

"I wish the players all the best this summer," Maguire concluded.

Maguire surely will be watching.
