Thomas Tuchel's call: Manchester United defender Harry Maguire was surprisingly omitted from the England squad for the 2026 World Cup by head coach Thomas Tuchel. The decision left many fans and the player himself stunned, as he felt his form at club level had been convincing enough to earn him a place in the final 26-man party heading to North America.
An awkward video call: The news was broken in a very modern yet uncomfortable fashion, with Tuchel choosing to FaceTime players individually to deliver their verdicts. Maguire received a text message beforehand asking whether he was free to talk at 4pm, setting the scene for a crushing video call in which he discovered he would play no part in the tournament.
A devastated reaction: In the wake of the announcement, Maguire turned to social media to share his emotions, revealing he was left completely "shocked and gutted" by the snub. He firmly believed he could have made a significant contribution for his country this summer, particularly following a solid and consistent season at club level.
Tactical preferences: Tuchel's decision to axe the experienced defender reportedly comes down to his ambition to construct a more dynamic defensive unit with greater long-term potential. The German boss is placing greater emphasis on current form, tactical balance and mobility rather than past glories and reputation, which ultimately counted against Maguire.
Fierce competition for places: Despite enjoying a solid end to the Premier League campaign under Michael Carrick, the cutthroat competition within the England squad proved an insurmountable hurdle for Maguire. He found himself overtaken by younger, highly-regarded centre-backs who have put in standout performances for their clubs throughout the season.
Preferred alternatives in defence: To fill the void left by Maguire at the back, Tuchel turned to several other options. The manager is also understood to favour a starting centre-back partnership of Marc Guehi and Ezri Konsa, both of whom suit his system and provide the tactical flexibility he demands.
A generational transition: Age was undeniably a crucial element in his omission, as the 33-year-old does not naturally fit into a squad undergoing a significant overhaul. Tuchel has his sights firmly set on the future, and retaining an ageing centre-back who would be 37 by the time the next World Cup comes around sits uneasily with a youth-driven approach.
Recent performances for the Three Lions: Although Maguire earned call-ups for England's recent friendlies in March against Uruguay and Japan, his displays seemingly fell short of fully winning over the coaching staff. He completed the full 90 minutes against Uruguay but was restricted to a second-half substitute appearance against Japan, leaving him unable to nail down a place in Tuchel's starting line-up.
