Shed a block and get after the right tackle.
Oh yes, the Bucs will still practice underwear football both to start training camp, and likely a few times after the start of training camp. However, underwear football season is oh-vah!
Today was the final minicamp practice as KitKat-eating Bucs coach Todd Bowles, pleased with his team’s work, canceled the final minicamp practice originally scheduled for tomorrow.
So as you are reading this here post, folks from Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht down to the trainers are scattering for locals across the nation and yes, the globe, as the next time these folks see each other will be for training camp in the final days of July.
But first, there was an underwear football practice. Of course Joe was there. Here are a handful of general observations:
11-on-11
* Here is something you don’t see often: Baker Mayfield launches a pass deep down the right seam and it hit Chris Godwin perfectly in the palms of his hands — and the ball hits the ground. Godwin looked down at his hands as if he was asking them why they failed him?
* PICK! Jake Browning throws down the left hashmarks and Josh Hayes picks it off and it’s a housecall. That’s two plays Joe has noticed in the past two weeks from Hayes. That’s twice as many plays as Joe has seen from him since the Bucs drafted him in 2023.
* Browning connects with Ko Kieft on a short pass to the right.
* Browning launches a pass down the right sideline deep and Ted Hurst hauled it in, but Hurst was ruled out of bounds. Joe will write a separate story about this.
* Browning against goes deep, again to the right sideline, but this time Tez Johnson races in from the left and catches it just before he goes out of bounds.
* Jalon Daniels throws two short passes to the right, both completed, the first to rookie receiver Dean Patterson (Georgia Tech) along the right sideline and the second to Dennis Houston.
7-7 Red zone
* Mayfield rifles the ball over the middle to Godwin for six. Mayfield really put some mustard on that fastball. He had to. Somehow, Mayfield threw that ball through the hands of two defenders. Excellent concentration by Godwin.
* Browning to the right for Sean Tucker.
* Browning to rookie tight end and Schiano Man Kenny Fletcher, who ran a slant to the inside. Once he got the ball, he weaved through traffic, veering right for a score.
* Browning throws for Bauer Sharp in the far left corner of the end zone and not even Ralph Sampson had a prayer of touching that pass. Sharp threw a hand up (like Keyshawn Johnson) as if he was claiming he was held. No flag. Uncatchable.
* Browning hits Tez in the end zone for six.
* Daniels over the middle for rookie receiver Eric Rivers (Georgia Tech) for a touchdown.
* Daniels launches a pass down the right sideline with a big, looping rainbow and it dropped right in the bucket for David Sills. Beautiful pass.
Two-minute drill
* Another pretty pass from Daniels over the middle for Josh Williams. Joe’s pretty confident Daniels will be the Bucs’ No. 3 quarterback, if they keep three.
* Daniels launches a pass down the left sideline and overthrows Kameron Johnson.
* At times, Daniels doesn’t realize he doesn’t need to throw 95 mph fastballs past batters. But watching him, it springs to mind for Joe what Phil Simms once said about America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston. “He was born to throw something.”
* Daniels over the middle to Sills.
* Daniels tries to connect with Patterson over the middle. Too much mustard.
* And this is why Daniels wasn’t drafted: Daniels tries to hit Kameron Johnson as he ran a slant from the right in. Johnson had beaten rookie corner Ayden Garnes (Arizona). But Daniels threw so far behind Johnson that the ball was even behind Garnes as he struggled to get the pick. But it was a nice play when you factor in how badly behind Daniels was with it. You don’t see too many corners going for back-shoulder fades with the ball like three yards behind him.
