Manchester United are stepping up their midfield rebuild this summer, and the latest transfer news has brought a familiar name back into the picture. As per recent transfer news, Man United are now seriously considering a move for Fulham and Norway international Sander Berge. He is someone who once made no secret of his dream destination in football.

Sander Berge on Man Utd’s radar again

This is not the first time the Red Devils have monitored the Norwegian. As reported by TEAMtalk, United considered signing Berge back in 2024 when he made the switch from Burnley to Fulham for £25 million. That move never happened, but interest has clearly not gone away.

Now, they are once again running the rule over the 28-year-old as one of several midfield options this summer. As reported by TEAMtalk, United have already wrapped up a deal for Ederson Silva from Atalanta. They are now looking to add at least one more midfielder to the squad.

Berge fits a specific profile. He is Premier League-proven, physically dominant, and has played nearly every minute for Fulham this season. He started 34 of their 38 league matches. Consistency at that level is not easy to come by.

What Sander Berge’s numbers say?

Fulham’s midfield last season leaned heavily on Berge’s presence. As per Transfermarkt, he played over 2,900 minutes in the Premier League, which puts him among the busiest defensive midfielders in the division. His numbers in aerial duels and recoveries rank well above average for his position.

Competitions Matches Accurate Long Balls Aerial Duels Won Defensive Contributions

Premier League 35 54 50 281

EFL Cup 2 3 1 11

As reported by Sports Mole, United have been monitoring him throughout what was an impressive campaign at Craven Cottage. He earned a World Cup call-up with Norway as a result, a reward that says plenty about the level he has reached.

At 28, he is entering his prime years. As reported by TEAMtalk, Fulham holds him on a contract running until 2029, with an option to extend by a further year. So the Whites are under no pressure to sell. That puts United in a difficult negotiating position, and any offer would likely need to exceed the £25 million paid two years ago. Berge’s value has only gone up.

The Liverpool dream and what it means for United

As reported by TEAMtalk, Berge once openly admitted that playing at Anfield was a dream for him. Back in November 2019, he told Norwegian broadcaster TV2 that Liverpool were the best team in the world at the time and that he would love to play there. Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was also an admirer, having personally told Berge after a Champions League match that he was “a very interesting player.”

That history is not lost on United fans. The Red Devils and Liverpool are fierce rivals in football, and bringing in a player who once dreamed of pulling on a red shirt in Merseyside would carry its own storyline.

Transfers rarely wait for the right moment. Berge’s focus right now is on Norway’s World Cup campaign, and a move to Old Trafford would represent a significant step up in ambition. Given how consistently he has performed in the Premier League, it is not hard to see why INEOS is taking a closer look. Whether United firm up that interest into a real bid will depend on how the rest of their midfield planning takes shape, but Sander Berge is clearly on the list.
