Marcus Rashford is a sudden target for Chelsea in a new development. The Englishman might make the move to London in a surprise twist.

Marcus Rashford last season at Barcelona

In July 2025, Manchester United and FC Barcelona agreed for the loan of Marcus Rashford. This came after years of a mixed association between the forward and Manchester United. Rashford was Manchester United through and through. Born in Manchester, the Englishman played all his youth football in Carrington. He then made a striking debut for the Man Utd first team followed by jubilant reactions from the United faithful.

The fans felt he was the future face of the football club. However, Rashford never really fulfilled his potential at Manchester United. It was always only glimpses and patches of good form. This inconsistency finally reached a breaking point. This consequently led to Rashford being loaned to Barcelona.

However, at Barcelona the story was completely different for Marcus. He was feeling good, his football was better. The 28-year-old was thriving under manager Hansi Flick. Rashford recorded 14 goals and 11 assists having played nearly 50 games last season. Other than the statistics, the Englishman also had multiple special moments in the Barcelona shirt. Like the absolute wondergoal he scored against Newcastle United in the Champions League in a blockbuster game.

Rashford’s stats last season, as per FOTMOB:

COMPETITIONS APPEARENCES GOALS ASSISTS

La Liga 32 8 7

UEFA Champions League 11 5 3

Copa Del Rey 4 1 1

Despite his great loan spell, Barcelona have opted to not sign him permanently. This decision has come after they signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United. Gordon is younger, and fits better under the Hansi Flick system. This sudden availability of Rashford in the market has opened multiple doors for the forward. Including the Chelsea door.

Why are Chelsea going for Rashford?

One word to describe Chelsea’s season last time around would be miserable. The Blues finished tenth in the Premier League. They did not manage to taste success in the cup competitions as well. It was definitely a season to forget for Chelsea. And one of the key reasons for their lack of success was their attacking players. Joao Pedro was the only individual who had a decent season.

All the others, including Cole Palmer only delivered disappointments. Especially their new signing, Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United, was a complete disappointment. Garnacho plays down the wing. Furthermore, their other wingers like Pedro Neto and Estevao also did not display consistency last season.

All these issues are solid reasons for Chelsea to go after a forward in the market. A more experienced and established forward, because of the abundance of young attackers in Chelsea. Marcus Rashford is a player who ticks all these boxes. Furthermore, Rashford has also played nearly his whole career in England. So he is also someone who knows his way around the Premier League.

Where do Rashford and Chelsea stand as of now?

In order for any deal regarding Rashford to materialize, a key decision has to be made. Is he moving out of Old Trafford on a loan deal? Or is he leaving permanently? As reported by Goal, Rashford still wants to fight for his spot at Barcelona.

Despite the arrival of Anthony Gordon, Rashford wants to extend his Spain stay. Moving on, he is also only looking for permanent moves out of Old Trafford. On the other hand, multiple clubs including Chelsea are looking to secure Rashford on a loan deal. This is because of the hefty wage expectations of the Englishman.

Author’s opinion

Watching Rashford fulfill his potential in Spain was a wonderful sight. One of the most talented English players in the last decade, Rashford still has time to churn out a glittering career despite being 28. However, his move in this Summer is going to be extremely crucial for his career.
