It appears that Liverpool have once again pulled a transfer out of the bag that nobody saw coming.
Just like with Cody Gakpo in January 2023 and with Dominik Szoboszlai in July 2023, it seems that The Reds have captured a signing out of nowhere.
And not only that, but it’s of a player who was expected to join another English Premier League team instead.
It was just yesterday that reports from Spain emerged that Victor Munoz had turned down overtures from Liverpool and was expected to join Newcastle United instead.
The Magpies had just sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and were looking to turn to Spain for his replacement.
22-year-old Victor Munoz, playing for LaLiga side Osasuna, was identified as that player but it appears that he’ll be moving to Anfield instead.
Fabrizio Romano has just confirmed that Victor Munoz is to join Liverpool.
The Reds have activated the €40m release clause in the Spanish player’s contract and have hijacked him move to St James’ Park.
Personal terms have been agreed for the player with his representatives and it appears a mere formality before he now moves to Merseyside.
It certainly is a stunning turn of events and mirrors what happened last summer when Newcastle United were looking to sign Hugo Ekitike, only for Liverpool to steal a march on the player and sign him instead.
For those unaware of the player, Munoz spent time at both La Masia with Barcelona and with the Real Madrid youth team.
Before joining Osasuna in 2025, he made a couple of first-time appearances for Los Blancos under former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso.
Since moving to Osasuna, his profile has increased through his performances and he made the FIFA World Cup 2026 squad for Spain.
Victor Munoz didn’t come on for his country in their opening game against Cape Verde, but he will no doubt be keeping himself occupied with a move to England in the offing.
The question on Liverpool fans’ minds would be whether he’s the replacement for Mohamed Salah or if there’s plans to still bring another player in to fit that role.
Whatever the case may be, Liverpool fans will be excited to know that the first signing of the Andoni Iraola era seems to be happening sooner rather than later.
