‘We Run Through You’ — Lions Coach Names Jack Campbell the Alpha of Detroit’s Defense

There have been numerous familiar faces on theDetroit Lions‘ defense, ranging from edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson to the team’s new defensive backfield, but inside Lions’ camp, coaches say this unit is defined by just one player.

The player that coaches view as leading the team’s defense is linebackerJack Campbell, whose journey from being a question mark first-round draft selection has now taken another important leap forward after mandatory minicamp in June.

During a minicamp interview on June 17, Lions LBs coach Shaun Dion Hamilton had nothing to say when it comes to Campbell’s role.

“I tell him all the time, we run through you. We put a lot on him, and he’s gotta be the alpha. That’s why he got the big contract.”

Lions linebackers coach Shaun Dion Hamilton said there’s one huge reason the LBs can be the strength of Detroit’s defense: Jack Campbell.

Those statements come just a few days after the Lions locked up Campbell with a four-year, $81 million extension that ties him up through the 2030 season. That contract, initially reported last week by NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport, features $51.5 million guaranteed and makes Campbell one of the best-paid off-the-ball linebackers in the league.

Detroit’s coaching staff believes the investment is already paying off. Campbell enters his fourth NFL season wearing the green-dot helmet, making defensive calls and handling communication responsibilities before every snap.

The numbers do not lie either, as Campbell had 176 tackles, five sacks, and three forced fumbles in 2025, which earned him his first Pro Bowl nod and First-Team All-Pro honors. No other player did that statistically in the NFL last year, making him just the third player to ever put up such numbers in his career.

However, Campbell is a different kind of leader who believes that no team can succeed with just one man doing all the work.

Campbell’s importance to the team has not gone unnoticed either.

The Lions’ general manager, Brad Holmes, has been active in locking up the best players under contract during the past offseason. These include star quarterback Jared Goff and star offensive tackle Penei Sewell.

The message from the Lions’ coaching staff is simple: Campbell is not just leading the defense anymore, but he is the defense.
