Liverpool have hijacked Newcastle United target Victor Munoz and are close to completing a deal for the Osasuna forward, as per reports.

Reports had emerged last week suggesting that Newcastle United were in talks with Munoz, as the club consider him a replacement for Anthony Gordon, who joined Barcelona last month. It was said that the Magpies were looking to seal a deal early this summer, having already signed goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Stade de Reims.

However, in a dramatic turn of events, Newcastle are on the verge of losing out on Munoz’s signature, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that Liverpool ‘are set to sign’ the 22-year-old, having verbally agreed terms with him and activated his €40m release clause.

The report was corroborated by journalist Ben Jacobs, who said Liverpool ‘have beaten’ Newcastle United to Munoz’s signature. He claimed the move for the Spaniard was driven by sporting director Richard Hughes and chief executive of football Michael Edwards.

Munoz is currently on international duty with Spain national team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He joined Osasuna from Real Madrid Castilla last summer and registered 12 goal contributions in his debut season at the Pamplona-based club.

It is understood that Real Madrid included a buy-back clause in Munoz’s deal around the region of €34.8 million, but they choose not to trigger it before Liverpool made their move.

Should the deal materialize, Munoz would be the first signing under new Reds head coach Andoni Iraola and the club’s first signing of the 2026/27 campaign.
