Real Madrid agree buyback clause with Liverpool for Victor Muñoz – Reds gesture key for agreement

Víctor Muñoz

Liverpool have hijacked Newcastle United’s attempts to sign CA Osasuna’s Víctor Muñoz this summer.

Over the past few days, the Spanish media repeatedly covered of Newcastle United’s firm advances to sign the winger. The Magpies offered €30m plus bonuses, less than his €40m release clause.

Three days ago, Sport Witness covered claims from Spain that he favoured Newcastle United over Liverpool and Manchester United.

Eddie Howe’s side identified him as the main target to replace Anthony Gordon, who moved to Barcelona in May.

However, there’s been a new twist in saga in the last few hours. The Reds have overtaken the Tyneside club by activating his €40m release clause.

The Spain international, who is now with his national team at the World Cup, has already completed medical tests with Liverpool.

How Liverpool convinced Real Madrid

AS director José Félix Díaz has explained how Andoni Iraola’s side were successful in beating Newcastle United in the transfer race.

In July 2025, CA Osasuna paid €5m to Real Madrid for 50% of Víctor Muñoz’s rights. The latter retain the 50% and also secured a buyback clause.

The Spanish media have repeatedly stated Los Blancos don’t intend to exercise the clause this summer.

During the negotiations, Liverpool felt the need to make a gesture towards the La Liga giants. This was done so that the latter wouldn’t use their clause.

Díaz claims the Reds did this by letting José Mourinho’s new club keep a buyback option valid for 2027. However, he makes no mention of the fee. This is likely to be much more than the €40m that Liverpool will invest to sign the 22-year-old.

CA Osasuna will collect €20m while the remaining €20m will go to Real Madrid. The total fee collected by the latter for Muñoz now rises to €25m.
