The media has been speculating about a return for Darwin Nunez to Liverpool lately amid claims that the Uruguayan has an agreement with the Reds.
Uruguayan journalist Martin Charquero reported: “Darwin Núñez returns to Liverpool. The confirmation will not be given in these days since the player asked to be focused with the Uruguayan National Team.”
This was emphatically denied by the likes of The Athletic’s James Pearce and independent Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Pearce said: “Reports in South America have suggested that striker Darwin Nunez could return to Anfield after a spell at Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal, but senior Liverpool sources insist that is not the case.”
Romano said: “Guys, with maximum respect to those sources close to the Uruguayan national team, close to the club or whatever, my information is that those close to Darwin and sources close to Darwin’s camp deny this information.
“Those close to Darwin Nunez say that it’s not true – there’s nothing ongoing with Darwin Nunez and Liverpool. This is the information coming from those close to the Uruguayan striker.”
Still, the reports continue from sources claiming to have inside knowledge of the situation, with Nunez seeking to leave Al Hilal this summer, where he is reportedly earning around £400,000 per week (£20.8m per year).

Emile Heskey weighs in on the Darwin Nunez to Liverpool return debate
Speaking to the Liverpool ECHO, former Reds striker Emile Heskey has discussed on whether or not there is any value in brining Nunez back to Anfield, with some fans online suggesting he would be the perfect back-up striker with Hugo Ekitike ruled out until late 2026 or early 2027.
Heskey said: “It’s kind of a short-term fix as opposed to being a long-term investment. I don’t see that being the fix that we need if I’m honest.
“If he’s terminated his contract (speculation suggests Nunez will), then we need to know why. I don’t think it’s a good idea. I can’t see that.
“With Ekitike’s injury, it could be another six months at least. And the interesting thing with Liverpool that you always used to have, I’ve grown up in an era where we always had young lads that could come in and do your job for at least three or four months, if not the whole season.
“I’m the same. Well, I’m a little bit younger than Robbie Fowler but I saw him burst on the scene. I’m a little bit older than Michael Owen, and I’ve seen him burst on the scene. We’ve always had them, and where are we with these players now?
“And that’s one of the things that Liverpool have probably got to look to tap into. But I can’t see Darwin Nunez coming back – bad idea.”
