Harry Maguire has broken his silence over the conversation that ended his FIFA World Cup 2026 dream. The Manchester United centre-back spoke candidly about being left out of **England**‘s 26-man squad by manager Thomas Tuchel and made it clear he wasn’t happy about it.

The defender said he immediately told Tuchel he was surprised and that he felt he had done enough to be on that plane. He also made a point of saying he wasn’t demanding a starting role, just a place in the squad and the chance to contribute, even if it was only one minute on the pitch.
What makes the rejection sting more is the age factor. At 33, the Red Devils skipper knows the next World Cup is four years away. “I’m 33 now, so 37 at the next World Cup. It looks far away,” he admitted on The Rest is Football on Netflix. That kind of honesty reflects exactly where he stands right now.
Tuchel’s Reasoning: Continuity Over Merit
When Harry Maguire pressed Tuchel for an explanation, the England boss admitted he couldn’t really offer one. As reported by Football365, according to the defender, Tuchel said the decision came down to sticking with the four centre-backs. Dan Burn, Jarell Quansah, Ezri Konsa, and Marc Guehi played through the qualifying campaign in autumn 2025 and built trust over those six games. John Stones also kept his place.
It is a rationale that is difficult to dispute. Tuchel has been consistent about prioritising continuity and trust above individual form. As reported by Sky Sports, the England manager’s own words when naming the squad were centred around loyalty, picking players he believed in and those who had already set the standards he wanted.

Harry Maguire had returned to the England setup earlier in the season and performed well. He felt that form, combined with a strong Premier League campaign for United, gave him a genuine case. In football, though, form alone doesn’t always carry the argument when a manager has already settled on his group.

Even Kyle Walker and former England manager Gareth Southgate weighed in, expressing surprise at the call. That level of reaction speaks for itself, this wasn’t a fringe omission. This was one of the more debated decisions in Tuchel’s tenure so far.
Despite all of it, the defender says he’s not done with international football. He still has 66 caps and insists he feels capable of adding to that tally. Whether Tuchel turns to him again remains to be seen but for now, the Three Lions head to the World Cup without one of their most experienced defenders, and the man himself is left watching from home, processing a conversation he clearly wasn’t ready to have.
