Arsenal’s summer is heating up fast, and the latest Arsenal transfer news is all about Julian Alvarez. Reports out of Spain claim a blockbuster swap deal with Atletico Madrid is already done. But sources close to the situation tell a very different story.

El Chiringuito’s Julian Alvarez bombshell

As reported by Spanish TV channel El Chiringuito, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid have agreed a deal for Julian Alvarez. The terms are €50m in cash, with Viktor Gyokeres also heading to Madrid as part of it. The full package comes to around £130m, making it one of the biggest deals this summer.

Journalist Jota Jordi went further on air, saying Atletico CEO Gil Marin rang Barcelona president Joan Laporta with a blunt message. Alvarez, he said, is no longer on the market for the Catalans to buy. Since his £81.8m move from Man City, Alvarez has scored 49 goals in 106 games for Atleti.

As reported by ESPN, Real Madrid had a €150m bid turned down by Atletico earlier this window. Barcelona also saw a €100m offer knocked back not long after. Arsenal are the third big club to push for Alvarez, and the first to get a yes from Atletico.

Julian Alvarez’s stats for 2025/26 season, as per FOTMOB:

Competition Appearances Goals Assists

La Liga 29 8 4

UEFA Champions League 15 10 4

Copa del Rey 4 2 1

Supercopa 1 0 0

The reality behind the noise

As reported by Mirror, despite the noise from Spain, insiders say nothing has been signed yet. Talks are still at an early stage and no deal is in place. Both clubs are in touch. Arteta and Berta both want Alvarez and feel he can take Arsenal far in Europe. But wanting a player and signing him are two very different things.

The real block is what Alvarez wants for himself, not what Arsenal can offer. He is on World Cup duty with Argentina and his mind is on that right now. His top choice of club is also still not clear, which makes this harder for Arsenal. Until he decides where he wants to go, the Gunners cannot push this deal forward.

Barcelona think the smart move is to sit back and wait for the right time. They plan to come back in once the World Cup is done. That approach makes them a live threat to any deal Arsenal try to get done.

Why Gyokeres changes everything?

As reported by TEAMtalk, the biggest obstacle in this saga is not Alvarez, it is Gyokeres. As per FOTMOB, the Swede scored 21 goals in 55 appearances as Arsenal ended a 22-year Premier League title drought. Selling him after just one season would be a gamble most clubs would refuse to take. Arteta and Berta are convinced he has significant room to grow at the Emirates. That strong internal belief makes a straight swap deal deeply unlikely at this stage. At 26 and fresh off a title winner’s medal, Gyokeres is far from expendable.

Barcelona remain a serious obstacle that Arsenal cannot simply ignore or get around. Alvarez has long viewed the Catalans as his preferred destination, and that stance holds firm. Alvarez is also currently on World Cup duty with Argentina, which slows everything down further. No deal of this size moves quickly when the player is focused on international football.

Until Alvarez names his club and Gyokeres knows his future, this Arsenal transfer news story has no ending yet.
