Adam Wharton or Lamine Camara: Which Midfielder Would Be the Better Signing for Liverpool?

Liverpool continue to be linked with several midfielders as Andoni Iraola shapes his squad ahead of the new season.

Among the names most frequently mentioned are Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Monaco’s Lamine Camara.

Both are young.

Both are highly rated.

And both appear to fit Liverpool’s long-term recruitment strategy.

But if Liverpool could only sign one, who would be the better fit?

Adam Wharton: Premier League Proven

Wharton has enjoyed a remarkable rise since joining Crystal Palace.

The England international has quickly established himself as one of the Premier League’s most composed young midfielders.

His biggest strengths include:

● Outstanding passing range

● Calmness under pressure

● Ability to dictate possession

● Positional intelligence

● Experience in the Premier League

Wharton rarely looks rushed.

He has the ability to slow a game down when required or accelerate attacks with intelligent forward passes.

For many Liverpool supporters, he already looks like a player capable of controlling matches at the highest level.

The biggest drawback, however, is likely to be the price.

Reports suggest Crystal Palace value him at around £70–80 million, making him one of the most expensive young midfielders on the market.

Lamine Camara: Energy and Potential

Camara offers a slightly different profile.

The Senegal international has earned widespread praise for his performances with Monaco and has continued to impress on the international stage.

His game is built around:

● Tremendous work rate

● Athleticism

● Ball-winning ability

● Progressive passing

● Tactical flexibility

Camara appears tailor-made for high-intensity football.

He covers huge distances, presses aggressively and is comfortable both winning possession and driving forward with the ball.

At just 21 years old, there is also enormous room for further development.

Financially, he would almost certainly cost less than Wharton, making him an attractive alternative.

Which Fits Iraola Better?

This is where the debate becomes fascinating.

Iraola demands intensity from every midfielder.

His teams press aggressively, recover possession quickly and transition forward at speed.

Camara naturally fits those physical demands.

However, Iraola also values intelligent footballers capable of making quick decisions in possession.

Wharton excels in that area.

In truth, both players possess qualities that suit the Spaniard’s philosophy.

They simply arrive at those qualities in different ways.

Experience vs Potential

Wharton offers greater Premier League experience.

Liverpool would know exactly what they are getting.

Camara arguably offers a higher athletic ceiling and may still have even greater room to develop.

That is why Liverpool’s recruitment department reportedly admire both players.

My Verdict

Personally, if Liverpool could choose only one, I would lean towards Adam Wharton.

The biggest reason is certainty.

He has already demonstrated he can dominate Premier League matches.

His composure, passing and ability to dictate the tempo of games remind me of the qualities Liverpool have occasionally lacked in midfield.

That is not a criticism of Camara.

Far from it.

I think he would also be an excellent signing.

His energy, defensive work and athleticism would undoubtedly strengthen Liverpool’s midfield.

But if Liverpool are looking for someone capable of becoming the heartbeat of the team for the next decade, Wharton just edges it for me.

A Good Problem to Have

The encouraging news for Liverpool supporters is that the club appears to be targeting the right profile of player.

Whether it is Adam Wharton or Lamine Camara, both represent the type of young, ambitious midfielder capable of becoming a key figure under Andoni Iraola.

If Liverpool manage to secure either one this summer, supporters will have every reason to be optimistic.

And if the club somehow found a way to sign both…

Liverpool’s midfield could be among the strongest and most exciting in Europe for years to come.
