The former Celtic goalkeeper was forced to retire at the end of the season with multiple surgeries required to fix a shoulder injury which persisted last season.
Schmeichel confirmed the news at the end of the campaign but wasted little time in switching from playing on the pitch to talking about the game in the Fox Sports studios as a pundit.
The veteran stopper - who won four trophies as a Hoops star - could not help but throw shade at the English as his fellow pundits Peter Crouch and Alex Scott revealed they expect their nation to compete for the World Cup.
Schmeichel, 39, even compared England to NFL giants the Dallas Cowboys who have been an also-ran team aside from one year where they won, like England in 1966.
“We’re in the Dallas Cowboys stadium. I liken England a little bit to the Dallas Cowboys – a massive, massive team with so much talent, but they won it once and they’ve never stopped talking about it," Schmeichel joked.
“Just putting that out there. Maybe today’s the day it changes, I don’t know…”
