Chelsea face tussle with 2 teams for signing–Deal can be done for less than€25m clause

Chelsea have looked to the South American market in recent years and continue to search there for signings.

River Plate’s Ian Subiabre is one of the players reportedly on the Premier League side’s radar for this summer.

Last month, Sport Witness covered claims from Argentina that the Blues and Borussia Dortmund are keen on Subiabre.

Chelsea and the Bundesliga side are also looking at other talents like CA Talleres’ Giovanni Baroni.

Chelsea and 2 other clubs are keen

That’s according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, who mentions both Chelsea and BVB when covering Fiorentina’s interest.

The 17-year-old climbed through the ranks of the Argentine club’s youth system and made his way into the first team in 2025.

He has mainly operated in his preferred role as an attacking midfielder and also as a right winger and a midfielder. The youngster has a goal and three assists from 14 matches for CA Talleres’ first team.

Giovanni Baroni has caught the attention of Fiorentina, Xabi Alonso’s side and Borussia Dortmund.

The Serie A side are keen on the Argentina U17 international, who is also of interest to Chelsea and the German club.

Baroni was born in Argentina, and Di Marzio claims he has Italian roots and will soon obtain an Italian passport.

La Viola will have to tussle with the English club and Niko Kovač’s side. In order to get ahead in the transfer race, Fiorentina have already contacted his entourage and will present their sporting project.

The Italian club have to make a significant investment to acquire his signature. Di Marzio claims Baroni has a €25m release clause, ‘although it could also be lowered to €15m plus bonuses.’

Contract, value and agent info

Giovanni Baroni has a contract lasting until December 2028, and Transfermarkt value him at €2.5m.

Agency SEG Sports Entertainment Group represent him. Their client list includes Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly, Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo and Napoli’s Rasmus Højlund.

If Chelsea were to reach an agreement this summer, they will have to wait until next year for him to arrive. The Argentine turns 18 years of age in January 2027 and until then, he won’t be able to arrive in the UK because of Brexit.
