Manchester United’s midfield department has been a major talking point throughout the summer transfer window.

Casemiro was recently confirmed as one of six players leaving Old Trafford at the end of the month, while United have already reached an agreement with Atalanta for Ederson as they continue reshaping their options ahead of next season.

Elsewhere, several former academy graduates are beginning new chapters in their careers away from Manchester.

Yesterday, Yeovil Town officially announced the signing of former United defender Jack Kingdon.

Now another ex-academy player has now secured a move elsewhere in the English Football League.

Cheltenham Town have officially confirmed the signing of midfielder Charlie McCann from Barrow for a nominal fee.

The deal was announced on the club’s website.

The 24-year-old becomes manager Steve Cotterill’s first signing of the summer.

He arrives after making 38 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring five goals.

While McCann may be best known for spells with Rangers, Forest Green Rovers and Barrow, he also spent a significant period developing within Manchester United’s academy setup.

After beginning his youth career with Coventry City, Charlie McCann joined Manchester United in 2017 and spent four years at Old Trafford.

He then secured a move to Scottish giants Rangers in 2021.

The midfielder went on to make his professional debut in Scotland.

He later accumulated more than 80 appearances for Forest Green Rovers before joining Barrow.

Cheltenham manager Steve Cotterill welcomed the signing and highlighted his previous experience working with the player.

“He has been on our radar for a while and is someone I know well having worked with him previously,” Cotterill told the club’s official website.

“He has a great attitude, is willing to work and of course brings lots of quality with him.”

McCann also expressed his delight after completing the move.

“As soon as I knew of the interest it was something I wanted to get done quickly,” he said.

The move offers the former United midfielder another opportunity to establish himself in the EFL.

Cheltenham will hope his experience and technical quality can help strengthen their squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
