Roma are closing in on Mason Greenwood and the biggest Man United news from this deal has nothing to do with the pitch. The Red Devils could pocket a major windfall thanks to a 50 percent sell-on clause.
Gasperini makes his move for Mason Greenwood
As reported by ESPN, Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini has taken matters into his own hands. The Italian coach picked up the phone and called Mason Greenwood directly, asking the 24-year-old to be patient while Roma finalise their formal offer to Marseille. Gasperini rarely makes personal calls to transfer targets. When he does, it means the player is central to his plans.
Gasperini made no secret of his frustrations with Roma’s attacking options during the 2025-26 season. He sees Greenwood as the direct answer to those problems. In Greenwood, Gasperini gets the pace, creativity and clinical finishing he has been demanding from his attack all season. He is at his best when given freedom to cut inside, take players on and arrive late into dangerous positions.
Greenwood’s stats for 2025/26 season, as per FOTMOB:
Competition Appearances Goals Assists Successful dribbles
Ligue 1 32 16 7 54
Coupe de France 4 6 3 8
UCL 8 3 1 12
Terms agreed as Roma lead race
Roma have already agreed personal terms with Greenwood. As reported by Goal, the contract will be worth around €5 million net per season, with performance-related bonuses on top of that. Manchester United will be watching closely. The Premier League club included a sell-on clause when they sold Greenwood to Marseille, and that clause is reported to be as high as 50 percent. A completed deal could hand United a significant financial windfall, depending on the final fee agreed between Roma and Marseille.
Interest from Fenerbahce has faded and Greenwood has made his preference clear. Rome is where he wants to be. The Friedkin family have been directly involved in making that happen. The Roma owners held talks with Greenwood’s representatives personally and laid out the role he would play at the club. It tells you how seriously Roma are taking this deal and how central Greenwood is to their plans.
Roma’s opening offer revealed
As reported by Mirror, Roma are expected to submit an opening offer of around €40 million plus bonuses. Marseille are holding firm at closer to €55 million. As per FOTMOB, Greenwood scored 25 goals and provided 11 assists in 44 appearances last season, giving Marseille leverage. At the same time, the French club must raise funds to meet UEFA’s Financial Sustainability Regulations, which puts pressure on them to sell. Roma are willing to structure the deal as a loan with an obligation to buy. They are also open to including a sell-on clause in their offer, potentially above ten percent, to help bridge the valuation gap.
Greenwood has already handed back the keys to his home in France, a clear sign the move is progressing. His year at Marseille matured him as a player, he was more decisive, more consistent, and more dangerous across the full season. Under Gasperini, the ceiling gets higher. Few coaches in Europe are better at turning talented wide forwards into elite performers and Greenwood is precisely the profile he targets.
The finances work for everyone involved. Roma strengthen, Marseille raise funds and Man United profit from a sell-on clause that is looking shrewder by the day. For Greenwood, the bigger picture is simpler. He is 24, playing the best football of his life and one signature away from a Champions League club that built their summer around him.
