Edinson Cavani has seen his contract terminated.

The former Manchester United striker had been under increasing scrutiny throughout 2026 after struggling with injuries and limited availability.

Earlier this year, several figures in the Argentine media suggested the 39-year-old should consider retirement after another difficult period on the sidelines.

Fitness issues continued to impact his season.

The striker was also linked with a return to European football last summer, with Cypriot side Pafos among the clubs credited with an interest.

Contract terminated

According to Ole, Cavani and Boca Juniors have reached an agreement to terminate his contract despite the deal originally running until December 2026.

The decision forms part of a wider squad overhaul being led by club president Juan Roman Riquelme and new head coach Rodolfo Arruabarrena.

Cavani leaves after making 81 appearances for Boca across all competitions, scoring 28 goals and registering four assists.

While his first full season at the club proved productive, injuries increasingly limited his impact over the past 18 months.

The report from Ole states that Cavani has become one of the highest-profile departures of the current rebuilding process.

That follows the recent exit of former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera.

Herrera’s departure was confirmed earlier this month, with the Spaniard becoming another experienced figure to leave Boca as part of the ongoing squad rebuild.

Edinson Cavani spent two seasons at Manchester United between 2020 and 2022, making 59 appearances and scoring 19 goals for the club.

His most memorable campaign came during the 2020/21 season, when he registered 17 goals and five assists in 39 appearances.

The latest decision continues a trend of former Manchester United players leaving Boca in recent years.

Last summer, former United defender Marcos Rojo also had his contract terminated by Boca as the club continued reshaping its squad.

With his Boca career now over, attention will turn to Cavani’s next move and whether the Uruguayan decides to continue playing or bring his professional career to an end.
