Just initially covering an injury crisis, the thought was that Armstrong would return to Preston to finish the season off on loan.

Instead, Armstrong would stay on Merseyside and be used frequently at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Despite that, there has been very little transfer activity from the Toffees so far to prevent a crisis like last season.

Armstrong is sticking around again, but he has been keeping track of transfers very close to home.

Liverpool transfer catches the eye at Everton

At one side of Stanley Park, Liverpool are getting to work early.

That will start with the signing of Victor Munoz from Osasuna, a rising Spanish winger who looked set for Newcastle.

Everton fans will be shaking their heads, wondering when it will be them who can be proactive in the transfer window.

Armstrong was quick to respond with a message of his own on Instagram, sending his best wishes.

"My brother," he wrote, with a red heart.

The main reason for that is because Moyes and the Toffees are looking at other midfielders to sign.

Hayden Hackney is a prime target, with bids already sent to Middlesbrough to try and win the race for their captain.

With Idrissa Gueye also in talks to extend his contract, he would join James Garner and Merlin Rohl as other options in midfield.

That's before you even consider Tim Iroegbunam as well, although he has been consistently linked with an exit, too.

Armstrong has a very bright future at Everton, and unlike Pinnington and Liverpool, a loan move is certainly more likely than a permanent exit.

Time will tell, but there is a new era coming for the Everton midfield.
