Liverpool have officially confirmed they have agreed a deal to sign Victor Munoz from Osasuna. The Reds have triggered his €40m (£34.5m) release clause.

The 22-year-old, part of Spain’s World Cup squad, can operate on either wing and made his international debut in March. Liverpool will pay the fee in two instalments.

Newcastle had been in advanced talks for the forward after selling Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, but Liverpool have won the race for Munoz, who scored seven goals and provided five assists in 36 appearances last season.

A club statement read: “Liverpool FC have agreed a deal to sign Victor Munoz from Osasuna, subject to a successful work permit application and international clearance.

“The forward, who is currently on World Cup duty with Spain, completed a medical at the country’s base in Tennessee in the USA and has put pen to paper on a long-term contract.

“Munoz is the first new addition since the arrival of head coach Andoni Iraola and will link up with his new teammates later this summer after his participation in the tournament with his national team has concluded.”

Munoz has earned two caps for Spain, scoring on his debut against Serbia in March. The attacker earned international recognition after an impressive season with Osasuna, where he made 34 appearances, scoring seven goals and providing five assists in all competitions.

He joined Los Rojillos last summer from Real Madrid, where he made four senior appearances after progressing through the club’s academy, having previously been part of Barcelona’s youth set-up.

Munoz is expected to feature in Spain’s second World Cup group-stage match on Sunday against Saudi Arabia in Atlanta.

He is the second addition to the Reds’ squad ahead of the 2026-27 season, following the earlier agreement to sign Jeremy Jacquet.

Munoz’s pace, his ability to break down low blocks, and his quality in the final third were key factors behind Andoni Iraola’s decision to push for him.

While there is a belief his end product still needs refinement, Liverpool are confident that will develop over time. The club are also encouraged by his ability to consistently get into dangerous areas, viewing his time at Barcelona and Real Madrid as further evidence of his potential.

The Spaniard primarily operates from the left, and with Mohamed Salah departing, Liverpool’s need for attacking reinforcements has become more pressing.

The club believe Munoz, alongside Rio Ngumoha and Cody Gakpo, will add valuable versatility to the forward line and are not concerned about any impact on minutes for 17-year-old Ngumoha, who recently made his England debut.

Munoz is expected to be one of several attacking additions this summer, with Liverpool continuing to show strong interest in Yan Diomande of RB Leipzig, who is also attracting attention from Paris Saint-Germain.
