Palazzolo Predicts Steelers Select Brendan Sorsby In Third Round Of Supplemental Draft

It felt like the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback drama was over after Aaron Rodgers returned to the team. However, Brendan Sorsby applying for the supplemental draft has created quite a stir, and Pittsburgh has been suggested as a landing spot for him. He had a chance to be one of the top quarterbacks in the 2027 class, but a gambling scandal has him looking to jump to the NFL. While the Steelers already have two young quarterbacks, analyst Steve Palazzolo believes Sorsby will join an already crowded quarterback room next month.

“I’ll say Pittsburgh in the third [round],” Palazzolo said Thursday of where Sorsby is taken in the supplemental draft on his Check the Mic podcast. “They invest in another third.”

If the Steelers take Sorsby in the third round of the supplemental draft, it will cost them their third-round pick in the 2027 draft. Many fans might not love the idea of the Steelers adding the young signal caller. However, only giving up a third-round pick might make it easier to stomach.

Sorsby has a lot of potential. He flashed some interesting tools last year while throwing for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns, and five interceptions at the University of Cincinnati. Getting him in the third round could be a steal.

Still, Palazzolo raised some questions about the Steelers potentially adding Sorsby to the mix alongside their other young quarterbacks.

“Pittsburgh is the most obvious one for me, even though they already have Will Howard and Drew Allar. There is a point where you can’t really carry three developmental quarterbacks. And they may have just said, ‘We’re out on Will Howard.’

“Maybe Mike McCarthy and staff is like, ‘We don’t believe in Will Howard’ already. Or they saw Drew Allar in camp and it’s like, ‘This is a much bigger project than we thought.'”

The Steelers have had a lot of good things to say about Howard and Allar. However, they haven’t invested a lot in either of them. Howard was only a 2025 sixth-round pick, and Allar was selected in the third round this year. Both of them are long shots to become franchise players.

Meanwhile, Sorsby could carry a higher reward with a low risk, depending on what round he’s selected in. His gambling issues are a real concern, and there’s a chance that he could face a lengthy suspension this season even if the NFL approves his application for the supplemental draft. That’s why spending a first- or second-round pick on him could be a mistake.

A third-round pick is a different story, though. The Steelers just took Allar in the third round, and he has more on-field issues on the field than Sorsby.

Also, Mike McCarthy hasn’t shut down the idea of the Steelers keeping four quarterbacks on their 53-man roster. They could go with Rodgers, Howard, Allar, and Sorsby this year. Then, those three young quarterbacks could battle for the starting job next year. The Steelers don’t have a long-term answer under center, and it’s worth taking swings.

As long as the price is right.
