Chelsea transfer news: Alonso demands elite shot-stopper as Chelsea ready €60m Costa bid
Chelsea transfer news: Xabi Alonso wants a proper presence between the sticks, and he wants him now. The new Chelsea boss isn’t messing around ahead of pre-season. According to reports from Portuguese outlet Record and journalist Ekrem Konur, Stamford Bridge officials are preparing a formal €60 million opening offer for Porto custodian Diogo Costa.
Alonso is reportedly deeply dissatisfied with Robert Sánchez and Filip Jørgensen after their mixed campaigns last term. He needs a commanding figure. Costa is a perfect option for the role. The 26-year-old Portugal international enjoyed an incredible domestic season, keeping 21 clean sheets in 33 matches and conceding a measly 15 goals. Right now, he is captaining Porto and leading Portugal’s defence at the World Cup in North America.
But a deal won’t be easy. Porto are famously brutal negotiators. They hold all the cards and will almost certainly reject Chelsea’s initial €60 million package. Costa’s contract has a massive release clause, and Porto want to see if his World Cup performances inflate his price tag even further. With rival clubs like Paris Saint-Germain lurking, the West Londoners face a proper bidding war. Chelsea must decide whether to trigger that astronomical clause or risk losing their primary target.
The cost of elite modern keeping
Spending £51 million on a goalkeeper sounds mad to old-school fans, but football has changed. Look at Robert Sánchez. He simply hasn’t provided the security a title-challenging side needs. His distribution is occasionally erratic, and his shot-stopping leaves you wanting. Jørgensen hasn’t claimed the shirt either. If Alonso wants to play his trademark expansive, possession-heavy football, he needs a keeper who functions as an auxiliary playmaker.
Costa is exactly that. He is elite with his feet, comfortable under a high press, and possesses a terrifyingly good reputation for saving penalties. He commands his box like a veteran. Yes, Porto might demand closer to €75 million if he shines this summer, but Chelsea have no choice but to overpay.

Waiting around is a luxury the Blues don’t have. If they bicker over €15 million, PSG will swoop in and pinch him. It is a massive financial gamble, obviously, but sticking with the current options is a guaranteed way to finish outside the top four again. Missing out on the Champions League costs far more than Porto’s asking price. Chelsea need to stop overthinking, pony up the cash, and secure their defensive anchor before the squad flies out for pre-season training.
