Cowboys Rookie Caleb Downs Draws High Praise from DC Christian Parker

Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker already expects big things out of rookie safety Caleb Downs.

The team selected the prized defensive back 11th overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. Even alongside an established veteran roster, the promising 21-year-old isquickly proving his worth.

Consequently, Parker is thrilled with what he sees from the rookie during early team workouts.

“He’s as advertised,” Parker said per The Athletic’s Jon Machota. “We spent significant time with him before the draft process, so we had a good feel on who he was and knew some people at Ohio State, at Alabama, in terms of how he was on the day to day that we maybe didn’t see in that 30-visit or at the combine.”

Caleb Downs Could Be Game-Changer for the Dallas Cowboys In The 2026 Season

To secure his services, Downs signed a four-year, $28.9 million rookie deal on May 1, 2026. The lucrative contract notably included a $17.5 million signing bonus.

He earned this investment after playing 44 games across three highly productive seasons divided between Alabama and Ohio State.

Ultimately, he logged 257 total tackles, 166 solo stops and 15 tackles for loss. He also had 1.5 sacks, three fumble recoveries and six interceptions in college.

Beyond that impressive statistical pedigree, Parker heavily commends therookie’s relentless work ethic.

“But he’s been doing great. He’s a worker,” Parker added. “He looks for coaching. He craves that. He wants to be corrected. He wants more information. And he works as hard as he can with the extras and everything else. So it’s been good. He’s been good to work with, and I think that he’s trying to advance at the right rate.”

While a bright future lies ahead, the defensive coordinator expects typical growing pains for the first-year safety.

“I think that we try to lessen those expectations in terms of what goes on outside of these walls,” Parker stated. “There’s a certain process to take as a rookie in general in the National Football League, and we try to abide by that process.”
