Anticipation is building among Manchester United fans ahead of the Premier League fixture release on Friday morning, with the schedule set to offer the first glimpse of life under new permanent boss Michael Carrick. The Old Trafford faithful are hopeful for a strong season after Carrick exceeded expectations last term.
Brought in on a temporary basis in January following the departure of Ruben Amorim, the ex-United midfield stalwart guided the team to a third-place finish in the Premier League, securing a return to the Champions League for the first time since 2023. But Carrick could find himself with an early headache, with a string of first-team players at risk of missing the opening fixture of the season.
It’s all down to the FIFA World Cup 2026, which kicked off in spectacular style in North America last week. The expanded six-week football extravaganza will conclude with the final in New Jersey on July 19, little more than a month before the first round of Premier League action gets underway on August 22.
That date has been pushed back to give players extra recovery time after the World Cup. However, those involved in the latter stages of the tournament are still unlikely to be fully refreshed before having to get back up to speed for the new campaign.
The situation is compounded by the fact the World Cup started shortly after the domestic season ended, meaning United stars called up by their countries headed straight into pre-tournament training camps. The dilemma could leave Carrick with little choice but to rest some of his biggest names at the start of the season – particularly if they reach the final.

As many as nine key United players are currently competing in the World Cup and could go deep into the tournament. A final between England and Portugal would be especially problematic for Carrick and his coaching staff, with four players potentially in action.
Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot are in the Portugal squad, whilst Kobbie Mainoo and outcast Marcus Rashford are representing England. Every other United player at the tournament is the sole representative of the club in their respective national team.
Key Man United players at World Cup 2026:
Matheus Cunha – Brazil
Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes – Portugal
Amad – Ivory Coast
Senne Lammens – Belgium
Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford – England
Noussair Mazraoui – Morocco
Lisandro Martinez – Argentina
