‘Bad news’ as injury blow for new Liverpool signing Víctor Muñoz – Spain confirm no clear return date

On Thursday, Liverpool confirmed the club have agreed a deal with CA Osasuna to sign Víctor Muñoz, subject to ‘work permit and international clearance’.

The Spain international was on the verge of joining Newcastle United before the Reds snatched him from their clutches.

Muñoz is with his national team at the World Cup. Liverpool acted quickly by paying €40m and carried out his medical tests while he was with Spain.

The winger signed a long-term contract with the Reds, but suffered a setback later that day.

How new Liverpool signing picked up injury

Cadena Ser claim Víctor Muñoz’s fresh setback is ‘bad news’ for the Euro 2024 winners.

The new Liverpool signing had earlier picked up an injury and only returned to full training before Spain’s goalless draw against Cape Verde on Monday.

He has been working on planned individual recovery. Spain have confirmed the 22-year-old has had a new setback during the recovery process.

“During the planned and individualised recovery process, an additional muscle injury has occurred, which will delay his return to competition. His availability for the upcoming matches will depend on the evolution of his symptoms,” the RFEF medical team stated in in a press release.

RFEF [Spain’s FA] haven’t specified the nature of the setback or when he will return to action.

Cadena Ser suspects the attacker will miss the group stage and may return for the next round, provided Spain make it to the knockouts.

They state: ‘This injury to Víctor Muñoz comes at the worst possible time. It completely disrupts his rhythm just as he was beginning to compete on equal terms with his teammates. [The injury] causes a disruption to the planning for the match against Saudi Arabia.’

Liverpool will keep close watch

Andoni Iroala’s side will monitor Víctor Muñoz’s situation and seek regular updates from Spain. He has experienced a ‘rollercoaster of emotions’ in the last 24 hours.

Liverpool signed him for €40m and 50% of the fee will go to Real Madrid. On Thursday, Sport Witness relayed news Los Blancos have a buyback clause valid for next summer.

The attacker then suffered a setback, and there’s no clarity on when he will regain full fitness.
