Spain international Marc Cucurella has revealed that a conversation with newly appointed manager Jose Mourinho played a significant role in his decision to leave Chelsea and complete a move to Real Madrid.
The left-back said Mourinho’s vision for the club and his personal assurances during a phone call helped convince him that a transfer to the Spanish giants was the right step in his career.
Speaking after the move was officially confirmed, Cucurella described the discussion with Mourinho as a turning point in the negotiations, He told me that he really wanted to work with me.
That I was going to adapt very well, that Madrid was a great club. I am looking forward to working with him.
Cucurella departs CHELSEA after an eventful spell in west London, where he experienced managerial changes, inconsistent team performances and periods of intense competition for places. Despite helping the club during key stretches and earning praise for his work rate and versatility, the defender ultimately opted for a return to Spain.
Real Madrid moved quickly to secure the 27-year-old as they continue to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season. Club officials reportedly viewed Cucurella as an ideal addition because of his defensive reliability, attacking contributions and experience at both club and international level.
Mourinho, who recently took charge at the Santiago Bernabeu, is expected to oversee a significant rebuild as Real Madrid aim to challenge on multiple fronts domestically and in Europe.
The Portuguese coach has already identified several areas for reinforcement and is believed to have personally contacted a number of transfer targets.
