Tottenham Hotspur have joined the race for West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes as they navigate what is shaping up to be a busy summer window.
Despite West Ham’s relegation last season, Fernandes was one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders and is attracting interest from several clubs.
Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain headline the European interest in Fernandes, but Manchester United are believed to be in the driving seat. However, the Red Devils have no intention of meeting West Ham’s £80 million asking price, opening the door for other clubs to make their move.
Consequently, Spurs are now eyeing Fernandes at the request of manager Roberto De Zerbi. Fernandes, who has been dubbed an ‘ultimate Premier League midfielder’, is adept at playing multiple midfield roles, and his combination of defensive solidity, progressive passing, ball-carrying ability, and technical elegance makes him a dream acquisition.
Alongside Fernandes, Spurs are also interested in Sandro Tonali and Adam Wharton, suggesting a midfield rebuild is on the cards at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Despite his impact last season, Spurs appear unwilling to sanction a permanent move for Joao Palhinha, while Pape Matar Sarr and Lucas Bergvall could both be on their way out this summer. Bergvall, in particular, is wanted by both Chelsea and Aston Villa.
After consecutive 17th-place finishes, Tottenham are aiming to reclaim their place among the Premier League elite and are ready to bolster their squad. They have already signed Andrew Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Jan Paul van Hecke, while talks with Manchester City over a deal for Savinho are ongoing.
