As Manchester United look ahead to the new Premier League season, Michael Carrick now knows exactly what he is preparing for.

The Red Devils head into 2026/27 in a far stronger position than they did twelve months ago, having recovered from an underwhelming first half of last season to finish third and seal a return to the Champions League.

Carrick, who took charge midway through the campaign, has since been rewarded with a permanent contract running to 2028.

Chief executive Omar Berrada believes the club’s first league title since 2013 is now within reach.

Speaking on Inside Man Utd, Berrada said United would aim to win it “ideally next season, and if not, then the following season,” reaffirming Project 150, the club’s ambition of a 21st league crown by their 150th anniversary in 2028.

Whilst that long-term target sets the direction, Carrick’s focus will be on building on last season’s momentum and turning a strong finish into a sustained title challenge.

Manchester United face X in Premier League opening game

Now, with the 2026/27 fixture list confirmed, the Premier League have officially confirmed, via their website, that Manchester United are set to face Hull City away at the MKM Stadium on Saturday 22 August 2026 at 12:30 BST on TNT Sports on the opening day.

The Tigers return to the top flight ready to test themselves against one of England’s biggest clubs.

Hull’s promotion marks a new chapter for a club that has spent recent years fighting to return to the Premier League after dropping down the divisions.

Last season United endured a rough start, losing 1-0 at home to Arsenal on the opening weekend, a result that set the tone for a difficult first half of the campaign before Carrick’s mid-season arrival sparked the turnaround.

This time, with a full pre-season under the head coach and a squad being reshaped over the summer, United will be desperate to start as they mean to go on.

Having secured Champions League football, United also return to the European stage and the considerable income that comes with it.

The flip side is a heavier schedule and the demands of competing on multiple fronts, a real test of the squad depth Carrick and the recruitment team are working to build.

For now, all eyes are on matchday one, and getting the new season off to a winning start.
