Feyenoord’s decision to part ways with Robin van Persie has now been explained in greater detail, with the club’s technical leadership insisting the move was driven by long-term analysis rather than short-term frustration.
The former Manchester United striker, who remains a well-known figure at Old Trafford for his prolific spell between 2012 and 2015, has left his managerial post after a difficult period in charge of the Dutch side.
His departure came after Feyenoord failed to close the gap on PSV Eindhoven, finishing the season significantly behind their rivals in the Eredivisie title race.
Club officials have now revealed that the decision followed a structured internal review covering an entire year of performances, results, and progression trends.
Reason for Robin van Persie sacking
Technical Director Devy Rigaux explained, as relayed by FR12.NL, that the analysis painted a clear picture of stagnation and regression, which ultimately forced the club’s hand.
“We conducted an objective analysis of the past twelve months, based on facts and figures.
“We observed that the trend was downward last season and the gap with PSV widened. Therefore, we decided not to continue with Robin.”
Feyenoord’s hierarchy stressed that this was not a reaction to one result or a short run of poor form, but rather a sustained pattern that indicated the team was moving in the wrong direction.
The club had initially brought Robin van Persie in with hopes of stabilising performances and building towards a more competitive challenge at the top of Dutch football.
Instead, the data showed increasing inconsistency and a widening gap to domestic rivals, particularly PSV, who ultimately finished 19 points ahead.
That statistical decline played a major role in the final decision, as Feyenoord look to reset their trajectory ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Van Persie now leaves the club as a free agent in management, with his next move yet to be decided, despite his high-profile status as one of Manchester United’s most iconic modern forwards.
