Newcastle United midfielder offer rejected – Need to go higher if they want to convince

Newcastle United have been linked with Atalanta’s Sergej Levak this week and they have work to do to sign him.

On Thursday, Sport Witness covered Tuttomercatoweb’s information about the midfielder’s future. The outlet were confident that the Magpies have stepped forward for the Serbian, who was also scouted by Manchester United some months ago.

The 20-year-old played 34 times in Serie C for Atalanta’s U23s side, scoring seven times. It was his first full season for the club, having joined from AS Roma in 2025.

The impact Levak made for La Dea U23s side got him a spot on the senior side’s bench multiple times.

Approach rejected

Corriere della Sera’s Bergamo edition covers Atalanta’s dealings in the summer. Marco Palestra is at the centre of it, with the club also pushing to sign Gianluca Gaetano.

Another important outgoing would be Levak.

The newspaper states Newcastle United offered €10m to sign him. This approach was rejected, with the Italian side wanting a higher amount.

At the same time, Levak would also be considered a first-team option. The club are assessing his progress and Maurizio Sarri will have a big say on his future.

For now, the midfielder will be part of La Dea’s summer training camp. This will give Sarri a chance to keep a close eye on the youngster.

Higher fee can seal move

Atalanta signed Levak for free, as Roma couldn’t tie him down to a professional contract. Anything they earn from his sale goes down as a capital gain.

That is something Newcastle United need to consider. In the Italian football environment, no player is unsellable.

The Magpies should see this as a sign that a deal can be done.
