Premier League hand Newcastle United fresh Liverpool blow - and this proves it

Premier League 2026/27 fixtures: Newcastle United have found out their Premier League fixtures for the upcoming season.

The game is almost certain to be moved for live television broadcast as it will mark Alexander Isak’s first trip back to St James’ Park since his £130million transfer to Liverpool last year.

Victor Munoz could also make his Premier League debut at St James’ Park, just not in the colours expected. Newcastle thought they had agreed a deal for the 22-year-old winger before Liverpool hijacked the transfer and confirmed the £35million signing.

The fixture is one of the highest scoring in Premier League history with 198 goals in 62 meetings between the two sides. Last season, Newcastle’s first home match also came against Liverpool as they came from 2-0 down with 10-men only for 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha to score a 100th-minute winner.

Opening the season at home to Liverpool isn’t exactly a welcoming one for the Magpies. In addition to the Isak and Munoz narratives, Newcastle haven’t beaten the Reds in a Premier League match since 2015 - a run stretching back 19 games.

Their only win against Liverpool in that time came in the 2025 Carabao Cup final.

In addition, new Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola has a strong Premier League record against Newcastle having gone unbeaten in six attempts (three wins, three draws) against Eddie Howe’s side while at Bournemouth. No manager in Premier League history has faced Newcastle so many times without suffering a defeat.

Iraola also ended his season at Bournemouth on an 18 game unbeaten run, the longest in the Premier League.

Liverpool are on the longest opening day unbeaten run in the Premier League having not lost their first game of the new season since 2012. Back then, the Reds were surprisingly beaten 3-0 by West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.

So the stats don’t exactly stack up in Newcastle’s favour. However, they are unbeaten on the opening day under Howe with three wins and a draw.
