Manchester United will begin their new Premier League campaign away from home after requesting a change to their opening fixture due to major redevelopment work at Old Trafford.

The decision comes as the club push ahead with significant upgrades to the stadium’s playing surface ahead of the 2026/27 season.

United’s grounds team have completely dug up the Old Trafford pitch for the first time since 2012, marking a rare full reconstruction of the surface as part of wider improvements.

As a result, the club asked to start their league season away from home, with newly promoted Hull City confirmed as their opening opponents on August 22, as reported by The Sun.

It will be United’s first opening-day away fixture since 2016, highlighting the scale of the ongoing work at the Theatre of Dreams.

Attention will now turn to ensuring the pitch is fully ready within a ten-week window, with Ipswich Town scheduled to be the first visitors to Old Trafford once the work is complete.

The project also includes new safety measures around the pitch area, alongside improvements to the surface itself, as part of long-term stadium enhancements.

Despite the disruption, the fixture list has offered United a relatively favourable start on paper under Michael Carrick.

After their trip to Hull, Ipswich will visit Old Trafford before United travel to Everton, host Manchester City, and then face Fulham away in a demanding but balanced early run of games.

The opening stretch will provide an early test of consistency, but also an opportunity for Carrick’s side to build momentum once the stadium work is complete and the home ground is fully operational again.

United’s early fixtures combined with ongoing stadium work will test both their squad depth and ability to adapt quickly at the start of the new season.
