The Chelsea transfer news about Alvaro Carreras is gaining buzz. The Spanish left-back may replace Marc Cucurella at Stamford Bridge. Cucurella will join Real Madrid by July 1.
Chelsea seek Carreras for next season
As reported by CaughtOffside, the Blues are seeking out Carreras. He might replace Marc Cucurella, who is joining Real Madrid for the upcoming season. The left-back has played under Xabi Alonso, who is the new manager for the West London club. Alonso coached Real Madrid between 2025 and 2026, before he agreed to join Chelsea.
Interestingly, the Blues aren’t the only club interested in Carreras. Manchester United is equally eager to have the defender by their side for the upcoming season. In fact, the Spanish defender had made his senior debut in professional football with the Red Devils. He joined the club in 2022. In between, he was also loaned out to clubs like Preston North End, Granada, and Benfica. In 2024, Carreras left Old Trafford for Benfica. He represented the club between 2024 and 2025, following which he joined Los Blancos.
Carreras’ stats for the 2025-26 season, as per FOTMOB:
Competitions Matches Goals Assists Duels Won Tackles Interceptions
La Liga 28 2 3 124 41 39
Copa Del Rey 1 0 0 3 1 2
UEFA Champions League 9 0 0 55 24 9
FIFA Club World Cup 2025 2 0 0 6 1 1
How will Carreras’ potential Chelsea transfer be beneficial?
If Carreras joins Stamford Bridge, it will be a major boost to the club’s defensive lineup. The Blues experienced a roller-coaster ride in the 2025-26 season. The inconsistencies in the team’s defense held them back from winning important tournaments, especially the Premier League. The West London club finished 10th in the League table for the 2025-26 season.
However, the 2025-26 wasn’t entirely forgettable for the Blues. They made it to the finals of the FA Cup. The Blues lost to Manchester City 1-0. They also won the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. This was the second time Chelsea won the tournament since the 2021 edition. As such, if Carreras agrees to join Chelsea, he could work with Alonso on improving the team’s defense. Having played before for Man Utd, the Spanish defender knows the English football circuit inside out.
Carreras performed well individually for Real Madrid in the 2025-26 season. Los Blancos finished 2nd in La Liga, behind arch-rivals Barcelona. They also made it to the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League. Additionally, Real Madrid qualified for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup semifinals. They lost to Paris Saint-Germain 4-0.
Future gameplan for Alvaro Carreras
As of now, Carreras has plenty of time at hand. Either due to plain bad luck, or allegedly due to his association with Real Madrid, he was left out from the Spanish squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026 announced on May 25. He wasn’t alone, for other players from Los Blancos like Dean Huijsen and Dani Carvajal among others were also shown the door by manager Luis de la Fuente.
However, if he needs to make himself available for Chelsea, Carreras needs to work on his health and his discipline. He sustained a right calf-muscle injury in March 2026. This kept him out of action from Spanish league **football**for a couple of weeks. Additionally, the Spanish defender was served 5 yellow cards and a red card for the 2025-26 La Liga. If he overcomes these inconsistencies, nothing is impossible to achieve for the Spanish defender. It remains to be seen which club Carreras chooses.
