Cowboys drafting Brendan Sorsby would be a talent gamble not worth taking

Brendan Sorsby's name has been making the rounds across NFL front offices ever since the Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback officially applied to enter the NFL's supplemental draft. The Dallas Cowboys have emerged as one of the teams drawing significant buzz. The hype is real, but so are the concerns.

Sorsby has the talent. In 2025, he threw for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns and five interceptions for the Cincinnati Bearcats. Across two seasons as their starter, he recorded 5,613 passing yards, 1,027 rushing yards and 63 total touchdowns.

Before his gambling issues became public, scouts viewed him as a potential top-10 pick for the 2027 draft, ranking him just behind Arch Manning and Dante Moore.

However, his off-field record is a major issue. Sorsby placed nearly $90,000 in bets over four years. He bypassed gambling rules by using aliases and friends' accounts to place more than 9,000 total wagers while playing college football.

This included 40 bets on Indiana while he was on the team's roster. Investigation records show he only bet on Indiana to win, meaning he did not bet against himself. Even so, the sheer volume of his gambling is a boundary most NFL teams will not cross, and Dallas should avoid it too.

Cowboys insider Bryan Broaddus discussed the idea on “105.3 The Fan,” comparing Sorsby’s physical traits to Josh Allen. Broaddus noted that Dallas might consider spending a second-round pick on him. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero also cited Jerry Jones’ history of taking chances on project quarterbacks -- like Sam Howell or Joe Milton -- as a reason not to count Dallas out.

But history cuts the other way here. Winning Sorsby in the supplemental draft requires a team to forfeit its corresponding pick in the 2027 draft. Dallas is already thin on Day 2 assets, holding no picks in the fourth or fifth rounds. Using a second-rounder on a quarterback who will sit out 2026 and likely faces NFL disciplinary action is a massive gamble.

Plus, the Cowboys do not need the distraction right now since they have Dak Prescott as their starting quarterback, and Brian Schottenheimer is entering his second year as head coach. Adding Sorsby would disrupt that stability and complicate the narrative surrounding Prescott’s future.
