Mainstay Man Utd star told he will have to accept pay cut to stay at Old Trafford beyond contract expiry

Luke Shaw would reportedly have to agree a pay cut on his £200,000-a-week wages in order to stay at Manchester United beyond his deal expiring, as per Samuel Luckhurst.

Currently, the full-back is due to be out of contract next summer.

Luke Shaw: The state of play

He is one of six players who could, in theory, leave as free agents in June 2027, along with Altay Bayindir, Bruno Fernandes, Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire and Tom Heaton.

However, aside from veteran Heaton, who will presumably call time on his playing career this time next year, Shaw’s contract is the only one that does not contain a 12-month option.

That means an entirely new agreement would need to be drafted up and signed off on by both parties for the 30-year-old to extend his Red Devils tenure beyond the 13-year mark.

Why United could opt against keeping Shaw

Shaw is United’s longest-serving member of the squad, but, over the last decade, has also been the most injury-prone.

His torrid luck on the fitness front has led to him missing an unprecedented 312 matches (Transfermarkt) for United since joining from Southampton in 2014.

Last season, he was able to accomplish a career-first by being available to start every single Premier League fixture, although there are doubts he’d have achieved the feat had the side also been navigating a European competition.

That’s why INEOS are said to harbour concerns over his condition heading into a campaign in which United will make their return to the Champions League, while also looking to advance as far as possible in both cup competitions.

Long-term successors such as Lewis Hall have been identified to replace Shaw, so if United managed to get a deal over the line sooner rather than later, there is a chance the long-serving Red could be released in the not-so-distant future.
