Marc Cucurella has left London for Madrid, and he says the decision was never really in doubt. As the latest news from Chelsea confirmed his exit, the left-back swapped Stamford Bridge for the Bernabeu in a move worth up to £51.8 million, ending a six-year stint in English football.

Marc Cucurella on why Real Madrid was an easy ‘yes’

Sometimes a phone call changes everything. That’s more or less what happened here. As reported by football.london, Marc Cucurella informed Chelsea of his desire to leave at the start of June, with personal and family reasons driving much of the decision. He had spent four years in London. the pull towards home was real and had been building for some time.

In an interview with Spanish outlet El Mundo, the defender didn’t leave much room for ambiguity. “When the offer from Real Madrid came along, I didn’t hesitate,” he said. “Playing for Real Madrid is an honour, and not many players can say that.”

He also made clear this wasn’t just a personal call, it was a family one. “Both I and those around me, my family, were clear that it was an opportunity we couldn’t refuse,” he added.

A deal done in days and the Mourinho connection

Despite the scale of the move, the paperwork came together fast. The Spaniard recalled finding out things were close on a Sunday afternoon, with only minor administrative issues left to resolve. As reported by Sky Sports, the final fee stands at £47.5 million plus £4.3 million in add-ons, with Real confirming a six-year deal keeping him at the club until 2032.

New Madrid boss José Mourinho played a direct role in making this happen. The two spoke over the phone, with Mourinho telling him he was looking forward to working together and that he would adapt well. Marc Cucurella didn’t hold back on how much that confidence meant. In football, that kind of personal push from a manager rarely fails to tip the scales.

There was also no shortage of competition for his signature. As reported by ESPN, Barcelona had sounded out a move earlier in the year, while Atlético Madrid’s interest had gone beyond rumour. But once Real moved quickly following Mourinho’s appointment, the race was effectively over.

Marc Cucurella’s exit and what it means for Chelsea

For the Blues, this one stings a little, even if the numbers made sense. The Spaniard was among the most consistent performers at the club over the past two seasons, making 163 appearances and winning both the Conference League and the Club World Cup with them, as reported by Sky Sports.

Competitions Matches Assists Chances Created Interceptions

Premier League 34 4 39 32

FA Cup 3 0 1 1

EFL Cup 4 0 2 1

UCL 9 0 8 8

The backdrop to his exit, though, was complicated. He had been vocal in his criticism of Chelsea’s decision to part ways with Enzo Maresca mid-season, comments that didn’t sit well with the hierarchy. As reported by Yahoo Sports, the deal was also shaped by the fact that this may have been the final chance to maximise a fee for a player keen to move. The club finishing tenth in the Premier League and missing out on Europe only added to the urgency of cashing in.

Marc Cucurella, for his part, has moved on without bitterness. His focus now is on the World Cup with Spain first, then life at the Bernabeu. For the curly-haired left-back, who once joked he’d shave his head over joining Real Madrid, it’s quite the turn of events.
