Arsenal named in three-way battle for in-demand Ligue 1 forward

Arsenal have reportedly been credited with an interest in Marseille forward Mason Greenwood as the French club consider player sales to improve their financial position this summer.

The 24-year-old is among Marseille’s most valuable assets and could attract significant attention during the transfer window as the Ligue 1 side look to comply with UEFA financial regulations.

Marseille recently avoided a European ban but were handed a financial penalty after breaching Financial Fair Play requirements, increasing the pressure on the club to generate funds through player sales.

According to reports in France, Greenwood remains one of the names most likely to attract substantial offers if Marseille decide to cash in.

The former Manchester United forward is currently valued at around €55 million and remains under contract until 2029.

Despite suggestions that Arsenal are among the clubs monitoring the situation, a move to the Emirates Stadium appears unlikely at this stage.

Mikel Arteta’s side have been strongly linked with a number of attacking targets in recent months, with the club prioritising additions capable of improving the starting XI ahead of another Premier League title defence.

Arsenal’s recruitment focus has largely centred on younger wide forwards and versatile attackers who fit the profile the club have targeted in recent transfer windows.

Greenwood enjoyed an impressive first season in France and remains one of Marseille’s most important attacking players, but reports suggest the club would be willing to consider offers if a significant bid arrives.

The financial structure of any deal could also prove complicated.

Manchester United are understood to retain a sizeable sell-on clause as part of Greenwood’s transfer to Marseille, meaning the French side would not receive the full value of any future sale.

That reality may encourage Marseille to hold out for a fee comfortably above his current market valuation should formal interest emerge.

While Arsenal have been mentioned among Greenwood’s admirers, there is currently little indication that the Premier League champions are preparing an approach.

The Gunners continue to assess several options across the forward positions, with strengthening the attack viewed as one of the club’s key objectives this summer.

Arteta is keen to build on a campaign that delivered Arsenal’s first league title in 22 years, while also helping the club compete more strongly in the Champions League.

As a result, numerous high-profile attackers are expected to be linked with a move to north London over the coming weeks.

For now, Greenwood’s name remains one of several being discussed across Europe as Marseille evaluate their financial situation and determine which players could be sold.

Unless Arsenal’s transfer priorities change significantly, however, this appears to be a situation worth monitoring rather than one that currently looks close to becoming a concrete pursuit.
