Marc Cucurella has revealed that a conversation with newly appointed manager Jose Mourinho played a significant role in his decision to leave Chelsea and complete a move to Real Madrid.
The left-back said Mourinho’s vision for the club and his personal assurances during a phone call helped convince him that a transfer to the Spanish giants was the right step in his career.
Speaking after the move was officially confirmed, Cucurella described the discussion with Mourinho as a turning point in the negotiations,, he said: “Yes, we were talking and he told me he was really looking forward to working with me, that I would adapt very well, that Real Madrid was a great club.
‘Then, nothing more, just that I should do very well in the World Cup and that we would see each other in Madrid.”
“No, I don’t know if he said that. He told me he wanted me, and that’s it. I’m very happy about this confidence. I’m looking forward to starting to work with him.”
Cucurella departs CHELSEA after an eventful spell in west London, where he experienced managerial changes, inconsistent team performances and periods of intense competition for places.
Despite helping the club during key stretches and earning praise for his work rate and versatility, the defender ultimately opted for a return to Spain.
Real Madrid moved quickly to secure the 27-year-old as they continue to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season. Club officials reportedly viewed Cucurella as an ideal addition because of his defensive reliability, attacking contributions and experience at both club and international level.
